Joan Bernice Peterson 94 years, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Huron County Medical Care Facility. Joan was born on January 12, 1932 to the late Joseph and Gladys (Johnson) Lehmann in Chicago, Illinois.

Joan and Richard Peterson were married on October 23, 1948 and moved with their 5 children from Chicago to Port Austin in 1968. Richard preceeded her in death in 1995.

Joan's fondest childhood memories were spending time with her grandmother and aunt and uncle in Galena, Illinois. Joan's most important role was that of being a wife and mother. She loved animals and was involved in many rescues.

Joan is survived  by her daughters; Caren Voss, Gail (Tim) Soper, Patricia (Ken) Ashby , Pamela (Mike) Stearnes; son Steven Peterson; sisters Lorraine Schubert and Diana (Dennis) Staral; grandchildren Stephanie Voss, Heather Voss, Ryan Soper, Craig Soper, Justin Peterson, Jason Ashby, Jade Windsor, Holley Schnittjer, Autumn Stearnes, Aaron Stearnes and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind a close friend Pete Nugent and special friend Kelly Babcock.

Joan was preceeded in death by her aunt Elizabeth Gottschalk; grandson Joshua Soper; daughter-in-law Jan Erickson; brother Richard Lehmann and brother-in-law Donald Schubert.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the medical care facility for the wonderful care given to their mother during her stay.

Per her wishes, cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory and the family will have a private burial at a later date.

Memorials may be offered in Joan's name to the Thumb Animal Shelter in Elkton.
