Obituary

Helen Esther Suomi, 93, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2017 at Meadow Lane Assisted Living. She was the daughter of Samuel and Linnea Seilo of Stambaugh, MI and the youngest of six children. Her parents, three brothers (Wayne, Reino, and Don), and one sister (Aileen) preceded her in death.

Helen was married in 1946 to Arnold D. Suomi, former Michigan State Probation/Parole Officer for Huron County. He preceded her in death in 2005. Helen is survived by her daughter Kathleen Suomi Johnson and her husband Paul, of Seattle, WA and her son Dan and his wife Regina, of Prineville, OR. She has one surviving sister, Ruth, who resides in Iron River, MI.

Helen enjoyed gardening, doing crafts, and spending winters with her husband along the Gulf Coast in Texas. She adored her children and loved to hear of their lives even though they lived many miles away. Her greatest pastime was riding her bicycle. Up until her late 80's, she rode 500-1000 miles every summer around Bad Axe; a remarkable accomplishment for anyone, young or old, and an inspiration for us all.

Thank you to Meadow Lane for caring for our mother in her last few years. Their thoughtfulness and compassion for her and other residents is exceptional beyond words. We also thank Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion for us and our mother in her last few days. Huron County is blessed to have you.

A memorial service will take place at a later date in the Stambaugh Cemetery.

Donations can be made in Helen's name to the Thumb Animal Shelter. Our four-legged friends in need will thank you for your gift.
