Obituary

On Saturday, August 27, 2022, Conrad Gibbs McNamara (aka, Mac) passed away at the age of 90.  He was born on March 4, 1932 in Escanaba, Michigan and grew up in the town of Ubly.

He attended Ubly High School and was very athletic.  He excelled in every sport he participated in, including football, baseball and basketball.  He graduated in 1950 and attended Michigan State University.  He aspired to play baseball professionally, but was called to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He was stationed in Japan where he was afforded the opportunity to play in the Japanese Baseball League, for the Japan Signal Service Battalion team, keeping his passion for the sport alive.  He was the league's MVP for their championship team in 1953.

It was there, in Japan, that he met his future wife, Mitsuko (nee, Kadokawa).  They married in 1955 and went on to have nine children together.

He, along with his friend, Donald Clark, formed DCM Industries, a tool and engineering company that manufactured parts for the automotive industry and for Massey-Ferguson tractors.  He was very proud when their company was recognized by the Small Business Association of Michigan.  He ran his company for many years and retired in 1993.

He loved to cook and in the '70s, he also owned and operated Connie Mac's family-style restaurant in Madison Heights, Michigan.

Whenever possible, he attended the large, Gibbs family gatherings, anticipating his chance to visit with friends and family and participate in the annual Gibbs Family Golf Outing.

He was an avid gardener and created peaceful, idyllic gardens wherever he lived.  His gardens included a wide variety of roses and all of his favorite vegetables.  He also enjoyed doing his own handiwork, including building a Koi pond, gazebo and benches for his garden.

While he was still physically able to, he relaxed by picking up a brush and blank canvas and painting.  Throughout his life, he also enjoyed fishing and bowling, the latter of which he excelled at to the point of scoring a perfect 300 more than once and winning awards on numerous occasions.

He was a devoted fan of all Detroit sports teams, so much so, that he had a wall of televisions all turned on at the same time.  He was also a sports memorabilia enthusiast, primarily buying and trading baseball cards.

He is survived by his children, sons, Patrick (Mercedes) and their son, Christopher, Michael and his children, Kelly and Alan, Dennis and his children, Alistaire and Riley, Daniel, Paul and Kevin, and his daughters, Donna (Terry) and their children, Ryan, Brandon, Rachel, Erick, Brittany, Keegan, Isaiah and Schuyler Nefcy, and Lisa and her son, David Reid, two great-grandchildren, his sister Ann Burns and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Timothy Mark, his parents, James and Loretta (nee, Gibbs) McNamara, his sisters, Janet (Harwood) and Sarah (aka, Beth Emerick) and his daughter-in-law, Jodi (nee, Smith) McNamara.

He was a long-standing member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Per his wishes, he has been cremated and his ashes will be spread, over a course of time, in all of his favorite places.

MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe, is handling the arrangements.
